The multitude number of Languages in Australia
If you consider the number of languages that are spoken in Australia you will be quite amazed. Most people think that the lingua fracas of Australia is only English. No doubt English is the main language but there are other languages as well such as the indigenous languages of the aboriginals that are dying as not many people get to speak it. There are about 300 to 600 different kinds of tribes amongst the aboriginals and each of them speaks a different language. Although some of them have picked up English in the offing in order to be able to get better jobs for themselves.
Australia is an extremely diverse nation and therefore, it has several different languages. As of today, there are about one hundred aboriginal languages that are still spoken and passed down from generation to generation just like the way it was spoken years ago. There are some aboriginal languages like Yolngu, Arrente and Warlpiri that are spoken by several people in the community and that make it quite a popular choice.
The major language that is spoken in Australia remains English. Second to that is Kriol which is spoken by a large number of people. There is also a variety of English called the Aboriginal English which is spoken by the aboriginals and is quite distinctive than the Standard English spoken elsewhere. The way these languages developed was due to the nomadic movement of the tribes and then each of them formed into a dialect which at times was far more different than the original language that it was derived from.
Also, because of people coming from all over the globe to make Australia their homeland, it is but natural that you will hear a whole lot of other languages as well. This includes languages that come from Europe and Asia. You have polish, French, Greek, Hindi and several other languages that are spoken with equal amounts of élan and ease.
In fact, these other languages are so very popular and widely spoken in Australia that even marriage ceremonies are conducted in different languages rather than in English only. This not only helps the bride and groom, to take their vows in a language that is their first language and they are comfortable in but also be understandable for the guests.
